On December 1, 2018 a truck running from the police crashed into our home, causing extensive damage and an unexpected renovation. The photos above show the carnage left behind. This page shows the steps we went through to rebuild our home and our lives.
With any project, the first step is clean-up and demo. We had to pull up all the floors and cut out all the floor joists from the dining room in preparation to rebuild the dining room.
Next, we had to use temporary jacks to hold up the upper dormer of the house. This was a challenge to keep the house from falling down while the foundation and walls were rebuilt. A big thanks goes out to Tennessee Foundation Services for helping with creating the temporary supports.
After the house was shored up, the crew began to pour the new foundation and lay the new foundation block. Over 30 linear feet of foundation had to be rebuilt due to the accident. Framing begins after the foundation.
More framing photos are seen here. We added a 20 square foot bump out for a box window and seat, as well as opened up the wall between the kitchen and dining room.
Once framing is completed, drywall is started. In addition to completing the drywall, new board and batten trim is installed and the box window and French door is put in.
Paint is next. The living room, hallway, kitchen, and dining room were all painted. The colors are as follows:
Living Room and Kitchen = Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter
Dining Room and Hallway walls = Benjamin Moore Dark Teal
Kitchen Cabinets Upper = Benjamin Moore Cloud White
Kitchen Cabinets Lower = Benjamin Moore Hale Navy
All Trim = Benjamin Moore Cloud White
Floors go down next. They are a Spring Creek Oak from City Tile. We put new floors down in the living room, kitchen, dining room, and hallway.
Lots of work happened outside to ensure the house didn’t look like a truck drove through it. We added a box window with board and batten trim and diamond grid windows to enhance the character. The stucco was matched to the existing walls and painted a Benjamin Moore Hale Navy with Cloud White trim. A copper roof was added to the bump out as well as copper gutters.
It’s been a long journey, but we are home. Below are a few pictures of the remodeled interior. Check out the awesome light fixtures created by ReVintaged Lemon here in downtown Murfreesboro.
