It’s often said the kitchen is the heart of the home and that’s no different at 425 N Spring St. Several renovations have been completed to modernize the space while maintaining the character of an 87 year old home. Thankfully, the previous owners did some renovations of their own, specifically granite countertops and cabinetry. Here’s a glimpse of what the kitchen looked like when the house was listed.

While reasonably nice, there were changes to make. First, the countertop hardware was replaced and the kitchen cabinet above the stove was shifted upward to make room for a microwave.

The existing cabinets were pretty nice, so they were refinished in Benjamin Moore’s “Cloud Cover” and crown molding was added to the top. A new Samsung appliance package was purchased from Electronic Express. The walls were also painted.

Next, the floors were replaced. Originally, there was terracotta style tile, but it needed repair. The choice to replace it was MS International Abbey Brick Tile from The Home Depot. This is porcelain tile designed to look like brick. Brick is a cool choice to preserve the character and charm of an older home.

Lastly, there were some finishing touches like painting the ceiling white, replacing the track lighting in the kitchen nook area, and repurposing a piece of shelving from the bathroom in the kitchen for more counter and storage space.

The final result is a subtle and relatively inexpensive kitchen renovation that modernizes the home, but also maintains the character you’d expect to find in an older home.
We’ve made some updates in the kitchen. We made custom live edge open shelving and installed a new kitchen sink faucet. The wood we already had, so we cut it, sanded it, stained it, and then mounted it on brackets.
We also swapped out the old kitchen faucet for a new one. This wasn’t easy being an older house…I had to sawzall the old faucet off.
We are thrilled with out kitchen updates. The next plan is to build a custom cabinet around and above the fridge.
